Upgrades coming to Bear Creek Dam

Aug 16, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie will begin structure maintenance and upgrades on the Bear Creek Dam, Thursday, August 18.

This work is routine and has to be done to keep the dam in good condition as the structure was originally built in the 1970s.

Construction will consist of, repairing eroded concrete, installation of a new debris management boom upstream of the spillway, removal of large trees and vegetation around the control structure to make it more accessible, and replacement of the retaining wall across from the north side pathways.

In addition, crews will also be installing lights along the primary pedestrian path and adding a new pathway that leads to the improved lookout point.

The city wants the public to know trees and vegetation growing in or near the damn structure will have to be removed because of their roots causing the structure to erode from the inside.

The trail within the project site will be closed for at least three weeks during construction, with work being expected to be complete by November.
