Centre for Creative Arts hosting month-long Alberta Culture Days celebrations

Aug 19, 2022 | 10:54 AM

Alberta Culture Days returns this September, with Grande Prairie’s Centre for Creative Arts Society a featured celebration site in the province.

104 grants were recently awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Status of Women for Alberta Culture Days events, equalling around $350,000.

The Centre for Creative Arts Society Executive Director, Candace Hook says they are excited to be a host site again.

“The Centre has been involved with Alberta Culture Days for over ten years now and we like to partner with other local cultural and arts organizations to put together events throughout the city!”

Hook says the format of the celebrations has changed over the past few years, “it used to just be a weekend, and then they extended it to a week, and now it’s actually the entire month of September.”

The Montrose Cultural Centre, the Grande Prairie Public Library, and the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie will also host some events alongside the Centre for Creative Arts Society.

No official list of activities and events has been set, but Hook says one of her favourite things they do for Alberta Culture Days is coming back.

“A wonderful exhibit, it’s called ‘Art Squared’. It’s thirty local artists, we’ve given them all the same size, square canvas and basically, there is no rules. We have all different styles and mediums, it’s a really good cross-section of our local artists.”

She says there will be an opening reception for ‘Art Squared’ on Saturday, September 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., along with a wine and cheese closing reception on Thursday, September 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m for the same exhibit.

A variety of free classes will be offered throughout the month, for children, adults and families to partake.

“We are going to do a bowl-a-thon with our potters and they are going to be making 100 bowls in a day for an upcoming fundraising event, so people can come in and check out the potters at work,” Hook says the event date hasn’t been set yet for the demonstration.

“Now that they’ve given us the whole month, we’re able to schedule a lot of programming… and of course being able to do things in-person again after a couple of virtual Alberta Culture Days, it’s really nice to do some hands-on, in-person things.”

Hook says everything that the Centre is offering as a part of Alberta Culture Days will be completely free of charge, including classes and take-home kits thanks to funding from both the City of Grande Prairie and the province.

“It’s just really nice to come out and try something new… there’s no risk and lots of rewards!”
