COUNCIL BY ELECTION

Pilat set to take another run at spot on Grande Prairie City Council

Aug 19, 2022 | 11:16 AM

Grande Prairie residents will elect a new member of City Council on October 17th, and nomination papers have already been filed by a few candidates.

Wade Pilat filed his papers earlier this week, joining Robin Rochon who submitted her nomination package one week ago.

Pilat served on City Council from 2017 to 2021 and hopes his track record from that term will convince voters to send him back to the council table.

“During my last term, I made a big push for tax decreases and getting some spending in line. I felt our spending was a bit offside in some areas. I think we did a great job with that last term. I think this term though, what I am seeing with what has happened with COVID is that I think we need to really start getting our head around some different types of social housing that we are going to need in our community.”

Pilat also feels there is a need for more court-sport facilities in Grande Prairie.

Despite not running in last year’s municipal election, Pilat says he has remained very engaged with the city.

“I am still on two committees with the City of Grande Prairie. I think I can fit back in pretty seamlessly and get back to work right away. The learning curve was the last term so I think I can get back and working for the community right away.”

The by-election is needed to fill the opening created by the sudden passing last month of councillor John Lehners.
