Aug 19, 2022 | 5:27 PM

The Peace River and Grande Prairie Forest Areas have raised their wildfire danger levels to Very High going into a hot weekend across the region.

Temperatures are expected to reach over 30 degrees throughout next week.

The GPFA currently has two active wildfires with one under control at 76 hectares. Overnight thermal scans have shown hotspots within the perimeter. The other was caused by lightning and is being monitored for hotspots as the ground is extremely dry.

Since March 1, 2022, there has been 44 wildfires in the GPFA, burning around 96 hectares.

The PRFA has two active wildfires as well, both are under control. There has been 94 wildfires in that forest area to date this year.

The province says they are expecting increased fire activity with the forecasted weather and have crews strategically placed throughout the PRFA to respond to any new fires that may occur.
