CITY BY-ELECTION

Rochon becomes first candidate to submit nomination for city council by-election

Aug 22, 2022 | 8:37 AM

Grande Prairie residents will vote for a new member of city council on October 17th.

The vacancy was created by the sudden passing last month of councillor John Lehners.

Two candidates have stepped forward so far, including Robin Rochon who wants to be a part of change within the city.

“I do not see any implementation of community initiative strategies for crime prevention, or at least ones that I know that are satisfactory, so I feel that we can definitely work with the RCMP at a community level and have our communities empowered with different strategies to keep them safer. And just have confidence in our communities to take back our communities.

Although the October by-election will mark the first time as a candidate for Rochon, the Grande Prairie native is by no means a stranger when it comes to politics.

Rochon has volunteered on past political campaigns and is also a member of a local constituency board.

“One of the first things that someone has told me is that it is about time! And also, from my peers, so I have a little bit of campaigning experience by just seeing the background stuff. And the people that I have seeked counsel from have told me to go for it.”

“I am passionate about change, and politics is something that I have already been softly getting into.”

Rochon says her campaign will focus on a few key points.

“Definitely affordable living. That is something that I hear a lot of people talk about. They are concerned about the cost of living. Also, a safer community. I think that is affecting us all. You do not have to go too far to hear of somebody’s property being stolen or them not feeling safe in a park or a community. And also accountability with city spending.”

Rochon says she has always been an advocate for truth, justice, and integrity, and feels the citizens of Grande Prairie deserve someone that will stand up and put their needs first.
