Bridge on Alaska Highway closed after fatal collision and extensive damages
The Fort St. John RCMP responded to a scene Thursday night (August 25) where a commercial tanker truck carrying a large amount of fuel crashed on the Sikanni River Bridge on Highway 97 (Alaska Highway).
A definitive investigation has yet not yet been completed, but it is believed the truck crashed into the barrier of the bridge and the driver passed away due to the collision.
Fort St John RCMP along with the fire departments from both Fort St John and Fort Nelson responded to the scene, where they reported the truck being fully engulfed in flames and releasing large clouds of toxic smoke.
Travellers planning on using Highway 97 are advised to plan an alternate route and keep in contact with the people expecting your arrival, as there are no close-by options to go north or south of the accident area.
