Alberta Culture Days month-long celebrations hosted by Centre for Creative Arts

Aug 31, 2022 | 7:03 AM

From September 1-29, Grande Prairie’s Center for Creative Arts will be host to a multitude of activities, exhibits, and classes for Alberta Culture Days as a feature site.

Every event associated with Alberta Culture Days across the province is free.

All month long, the Centre and Art Gallery of Grande Prairie will have locally and nationally curated exhibits on display.

Take-home activity kits are available at the Art Gallery and Centre, for all ages.

Center for Creative Arts Executive Director Candace Hook says this is Grande Prairie’s 13th year participating.

“We have such a diverse amount of programs available for the month at different locations throughout the province, so that’s one thing I’m really excited to share because I think if people haven’t been to Grande Prairie or familiar, you might not know how many cultural organizations we have.”

Hook says the events create opportunities to work together and cross-promote each other.

“I love arts and culture in Grande Prairie and I think when I moved here I wasn’t really familiar with the community… and I was so pleasantly surprised. We have excellent facilities, active volunteers, good organizations and I think it’s probably impossible to not find a weekend or weekday where there are no arts and culture activities happening.”

Soapstone carving, painting, sewing, and pottery are the free classes that can be taken at the Centre for the event.

“It’s about working together as community and opening up those classes to be really inclusive and have everyone creating at the same time.”

Hook says “honestly… they’re all good!”, when it comes to the list of events throughout September in the City.

One event in particular is out of the Centre’s familiarity, as they have teamed with the Cavalcade Theatre Company for a project called “Letters I’ll Never Send”.

“We have a mailbox here where people can bring in letters that they would like to send, that would give them some closure, something that they’ve always wanted to say… good or bad or anything in-between, and they can submit that into the mailbox and the creative people at Cavalcade are going to take those letters and adapt them into a performance.”

The drop-off for anonymous letters will be from September 1 – 17, and performances will be done on September 23 – 25.

“There is lots to celebrate, there is lots to participate in and hopefully in the month of September with all these events being free, it gives people a chance to try a few different things and find out where they fit. There really is… it’s a bit cliche, but there’s something for everyone with culture in Grande Prairie.”
