HIGH SPEED CHASE

ASIRT decides no charges to be laid against officer involved in 2017 high speed chase

An RCMP officer will not be charged for his role in a 2017 high-speed chase that ended with a two-vehicle collision that resulted in one death.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team recently wrapped up an over three-and-a-half-year investigation into the October 29, 2017incident.

They say while no charges were being laid, the officer’s driving and failure to follow RCMP policy of notifying dispatch and the supervisors of his involvement in a high-speed pursuit put both himself and other users of the road at the time at risk.

The late evening chase began on 84th avenue when the officer attempted to pull over a truck that was going 84 km an hour in a 60 km zone.

It eventually moved up and down 116th street, with speeds surpassing 190 km an hour.

The officer eventually broke off the chase on 116th street.

Four minutes after that, the truck – which was still traveling well above the speed limit – ran a red light and crashed into a car, killing the driver of the car.

It was later determined that the truck involved in the high-speed chase and crash was stolen.
