Grande Prairie Music Society seasons start this month

Sep 4, 2022 | 1:46 PM

The Grande Prairie Music Society is preparing for the upcoming season and is inviting all residents of GP and surrounding areas to bring out their instruments and join one of their ensembles.

Heather Penner, Social Media and Communications liaison for the Society says they are a passionate group of artists who want to be a part of the community and want to share the experience of live music with the City.

“The Grande Music Society was formally known as the Grande Prairie Marching Band Association, and then as we became aware that different programs in the community weren’t going to be continued anymore, then the members of that society decided they wanted to expand, expand our area and to make sure those programs continued.”

Penner adds the creation of the Music Society only came about last year in August.

“The members of the marching band worked together to rename ourselves and expand our program offering so in addition to the marching band we now have; the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, and the Youth Orchestra.”

She says last year was a soft start for them, struggling with having everybody in person for rehearsals until restrictions were lifted.

The Music Society had 85 members last year and is looking to significantly increase the number this year.

“Groups will be starting up on the week of September 12, the Jazz Ensemble has a concert on November 19, the Wind Ensemble has a concert on November 26, and the Symphony Orchestra and Youth Orchestra will have a concert on their concert on December 4.”

Registration is now open to join any of the four ensembles with rehearsals set to start on the week of September 12.

Rehearsal times:

  • Monday – Jazz Band 7-9:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday – Symphony Orchestra 7-9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday – Symphonic Wind Ensemble 7-9:30 p.m.
  • Saturday – Youth Orchestra 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

Every participant in the groups must be a member of the society, which costs $10 for the year.

You also must give a participant contribution of $125, for each group you play in.
