GP Ladies Basketball League starting up again after pandemic

Sep 7, 2022 | 11:22 AM

The Grande Prairie Ladies Basketball League will be hitting the court again after a two-year-long hiatus.

Their season runs from October – December, and January – March, with games once per week at a school in the City.

Women 18 years or older are allowed to play and is pay-to-play, with usually around 8-10 teams per season to play against.

President of the GP Ladies Basketball League Dallas English says she’s been in the league since she moved to Grande Prairie in 2001 and it’s a great way to meet people and get exercise.

“We can offer some friendly competition and try our best to get people on a team if they don’t already have one, with the option to be a substitute,” she says.

“We just want people to come out and get active and participate in this league that has been running for so long.”

English says she’s not sure how long the league has been around but a guess is “probably since the 80s!”

She says the league is non-profit and only gets teams to pay for gym time at local schools and referees for games.

A winner of the league is competed for at the end of the season, with two semi-finals and a final game to give the champion team the league trophy, cash reward, and bragging rights.

If you are interested in playing in the Grande Prairie Ladies Basketball League, you can contact Dallas English by emailing: gpladiesbasketball@hotmail.com, or on their Facebook page.

The deadline to enter yourself or a team is September 30, 2022.
