Evacuation order downgraded to alert for Kelly Lake residents

The County of Grande Prairie says it is continuing to monitor the Bearhole Lake wildfire west of the provincial border, near the community of Kelly Lake.

There is no current threat to property or the public in the County. The Peace River Regional District has lifted the evacuation order for Kelly Lake and replaced it with an evacuation alert.

Residents are able to return home but should be prepared to evacuate again on short notice should conditions shift.

The B.C. Wildfire service reported on Wednesday minimal fire growth and activity, thanks to planned ignition operations to reduce the wildfire’s potential spread.

The Bearhole Lake Wildfire is estimated to be over 6,3000 hectares in size as of Thursday, September 8, and was caused due to lightning.

The fire has not crossed Heritage Highway (Hwy 52 E) in B.C.

Smoke will continue to be in the County and City of Grande Prairie over the coming days. Anyone with health conditions or concerns regarding smoke should check with Alberta Health Services for more information or by calling Health Link at 8-1-1 for 24/7 non-emergent health advice.
