Ducks Unlimited to host open house at Wetland Centre October 5

Sep 9, 2022 | 7:13 PM

Ducks Unlimited will be hosting an open house at its Wetland Centre on October 5.

It will go from noon to 7 pm.

Conservation program specialist Rick Murray says they have been planning for improvements they want to make next year.

“We are hoping to get feedback from the community. The intent of having an open house at the Wetland Centre on October 5 is to get feedback from the community to see what they would like to see from this site.”

“Also, just to get the word out that there is a resource very close to Grande Prairie that people can go and tour the area on trails (and) learn about wetland conservation.”

He adds they are looking at several things.

“We’re working with a group right now to be looking at setting a trail standard, so either expanding our trails or improving on our trails to make them more permanent features.”

“We’re also looking at more activities out at the Wetland Centre. We’re talking about things like an outdoor classroom. We’re talking about things like improving some of the demonstrations that we have out there.”

Murray says the original intent for the centre was to show best practices for minimizing environmental impacts.

“Now we’re trying to widen the tent a little bit. Obviously, Ducks Unlimited, we’re a group focused on wetland conservation, which is very relevant here with all our farmland and then surrounded by the boreal (forest).”

“What we’re trying to do is create a space for folks to have research opportunities, educational opportunities.”

Murray says they also want to provide a place for industry to come together to talk best practices on how they can overcome challenges they have in minimizing their environmental impacts.

The centre is located in Evergreen Park parking lot D, across from the TARA Centre.
