Over $244,000 raised for community by Cash and Camping Lottery

After a huge rise in sales in the last ten days of the campaign, the Rotary Cash and Camping Lottery was able to break even and pay out their partner groups and keep funds within Grande Prairie.

With tough economic times in 2022, lottery sales were down so much, it was thought the campaign would end in the red.

A call for support was put out to buy Cash and Camping Lottery tickets three weeks before closing.

In the last ten days, 25 per cent of total sales were made, with nine per cent on the closing day.

Lottery Chair for Swan City Rotary Pamela Nordin says they were relieved to be able to give back with the funds raised.

“The last five days of the lottery allowed us to pay out.”

“The community responded in a huge way, as they always do, and we were able to turn it around so we are very grateful,” Nordin noted.

Seven organizations that benefitted from the lottery were presented with $5,000 cheques on September 21:

  • Camp Tamarack, funds going towards kids that can’t afford registration and supplies
  • Canadian Mental Health Association, funds going towards purchasing supplies for programming for individuals suffering with mental health (ie: emergency blankets, etc.)
  • Hythe Athletic Association, using funds to redo the flooring in the arena
  • Regional EMS Foundation, using funds for lending libraries for EMS practitioners with mental health issues
  • Rotaract Club of GP
  • Seniors Outreach, using funds for office supplies/utilities with their limited operating budget
  • Troyanda Society, funds going towards new Ukrainian dance costumes

The Grande Prairie Gymnastics Club received $36,700.91 for their competitive programming to keep fees down in all areas.

$244,672.75 was raised in total, with some handed out to multiple partner groups, and the rest to be dispersed into the community over the next year.
