Rotary Community Food Bank Drive returns Thursday

Sep 21, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Update:

The Food Bank has said in a press release, they are in desperate need of more volunteers, as of this morning (Wednesday, September 21) they were short about 50 teams.

An annual, city-wide food drive is back for the first time since 2019 in Grande Prairie.

The Rotary Community Food Bank Drive will be happening in every neighborhood on September 22, with volunteers going door to door asking for donations to the Grande Prairie and area Salvation Army Community Food Bank.

Lori Pollock, Chair of the Food Drive for Rotary says the event has been going on for nearly 30 years.

“The campaign has changed a little bit from its inception to a point where it’s grown to where we try and canvas the entire city in one evening, going door to door to every home and collect donations for the food bank.”

She says the non-perishable food, hygiene products, and baby items all go into hampers for those in need.

“Sadly that need has continued to increase. Even this year it looks like it could be almost twice as much as it was last year, and we’ve learned most of those hampers are feeding children.”

The pandemic affected door-to-door collection, but before in 2019, the drive collected 47 tons of food within only three hours.

Teams of four to six volunteers are wanted to collect donations at every door in Grande Prairie this Thursday after 6 p.m.

“In about two to three hours, the whole drive should be completed and we are hoping to have the same success as we had in 2019 where we can store away enough food to help the Salvation Army provide for those in need,” she says.

Teams can register on www.gpfooddrive.ca, providing their own transportation and being dispatched with collection boxes and signage to identify themselves while going around. The teams return to the warehouse to unload their collection and enjoy a barbeque at the end.

Donations can be made physically, monetarily online, or both!
