Senior’s Reading Theatre is looking for members

Sep 22, 2022 | 7:55 AM

The drama group, Seniors Reading Theatre is looking for new members to join.

A representative from the group, Bethe Goldie says anyone can join their group, regardless of age.

“We’re looking for more members and were having a meeting we would like to invite everyone to, and this meeting is on Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m. in the Centre for Creative Arts.”

Goldie says their group believes in connecting, and that’s part of the reason they don’t have an age limit.

The group believes the multi-generational connection is very important and wants to not only showcase it in their group, but also in the things they do around the community.

“One of the things we’re doing right now is practicing for the Heritage Village Folk Tales tour, we will have a group of people reading there in mid-October and it will be an amazing fun event, again,” says Goldie.

This will be the third year in a row Senior’s Reading Theatre will be doing readings at the Heritage Village, which Goldie hopes will lead to their group getting opportunities to perform at elementary schools and to act out historical readings that can educate children in a fun, connecting way.

This opportunity doesn’t only involve live performing theatre, but group members will also have the ability to help with the group’s Telus Story Hive project, ‘Tales from a One Room Classroom’ which tells stories using interviews and readings from Mary Nutting’s Archival Book.

Goldie says this all started as just a tactic to get seniors reading more without having to test their memory, and now it’s just taken on a mind of its own.

“Senior’s Reading Theatre started as an effort to get seniors reading things, and you know a lot of people love drama and putting plays on, but a lot of us (seniors) as we start to get older we don’t want to memorize things, so reading things is a great opportunity for us to give presentations to others and not have to be worried about memorizing things.”
