Centaurs playing in league final Saturday

Sep 23, 2022 | 2:17 PM

The Grande Prairie Centaurs rugby team will be chasing a championship in Edmonton this weekend.

The Centaurs play St. Albert Saturday at Ellerslie Rugby Park in the Edmonton Rugby Union Division 2 cup final.

Coach Gus Fai says all the teams in the league have had a hard time getting players this year.

Work obligations is one reason.

“And it being the first season back after two years, players have gone and (are) doing other things now, so every team is struggling at the moment. We’re one of the lucky ones that’s always able to come still up with at least 15 players on the field.”

He adds they had to do some recruiting.

“(We called) the old boys, new up-and-coming players, just telling (them) come check out the game. Pretty much by word-of-mouth and just getting our players to talk to their friends and see if they wanted to try out the game.”

Fai says they had only one game this year where they took the field with 14 players.

He adds after that two-year layoff, it is great to be back playing again.

“The last time we played was 2019 and we won that. We won the city (ERU) competition, and we won the provincials.”

The Centaurs only lost one game all year in 2022 and it was to unbeaten St. Albert in the first game of the season. They also averaged over 50 points per game.

Game time Saturday is 5:15 p.m. Fai says families, supporters, and former players will all be going to the game to support the Centaurs.

“Thanks to everyone that supported us and hopefully, we can bring the cup back to GP,” added Fai.
