Long list of northwestern Alberta communities among 50 to get funding for broadband projects

Sep 24, 2022 | 9:00 AM

The province says the provincial and federal governments are putting $70.6 million into broadband projects in more than 50 communities, nearly half of them in northwestern Alberta.

A release from the province says this will help connect 10,400 homes across the province.

The funding is the first announced under the new Universal Broadband Fund.

The province has set aside $390 million over four years to bring high-speed internet to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. The federal government has committed a similar amount.

“Improving access to high-speed internet is one of the most powerful things we can do to support rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Alberta. A reliable internet connection unlocks access to the essential services we rely on every day, supporting everything from online learning to better home health care. Today’s announcement is just the first of many to come and represents another step towards our goal of ensuring universal connectivity for all families and businesses in Alberta,” says Service Alberta Minister Nate Glubish in a release from the province.

The province says it is evaluating other projects. The list of communities where funding is going includes:
