Friday marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Friday marks the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre President Len Auger says it is important for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to understand what happened and all the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“So that we can all learn to respect and learn from each other and be able to reconcile a lot of the issues that happened.”

“I look at it as a day that at least keeps bringing it up. If we continue having TRC Day, it just keeps bringing it back that are we doing anything and are we getting any better?”

Auger says his biggest hope “is that we can all live and work together.”

“And be able to feel good about who we are regardless of the race, creed, or colour.”

“To me, it’s important that with the TRC and reconciliation activities that we really start to learn about each other,” he says.

Auger believes there is a lot more awareness about the day this year.

“I see a lot of organizations starting to do small things in relation to reconciliation so, yeah, it is slowly improving. Obviously, still a lot of work (needs to be done).”

Auger says a lot of the schools are now hiring Indigenous liaison workers and some businesses are doing the same thing.
