Advance voting in Grande Prairie by-election starts Saturday

Oct 7, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Advance voting in the Grande Prairie city council by-election will start Saturday.

Returning Officer Leona Hanson there will be two advance voting days.

“Saturday, October 8 is the first one and then Saturday, October 15 is the second one. They are running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the 8th and the 15th.”

Voting will take place in the Teresa Sargent Hall in the Montrose Cultural Centre both days.

Hanson outlines who is eligible to vote.

“You have to be 18 years of age, a resident of the City of Grande Prairie on election day and be a Canadian citizen.”

Hanson says unlike other council elections, where people can pick multiple candidates, this time they can only vote for one of the eight people running.

“This is a by-election. Unfortunately, we lost a council member (John Lehners passed away in July) earlier this year and so the municipality was required to have a by-election to fill that vacant seat.”

“With that, there is only one council member that will be voted in on election day.”

Election Day is October 17. Hanson says there will be eight different voting stations open that day. People can find out where to vote on a map on the city website.
