Sentencing set for man charged after two deaths in Paddle Prairie

Alberta Justice says a man charged after two people died in a house fire in Paddle Prairie is scheduled to be sentenced February 8 in High Level court.

Dallas Cardinal has pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

He was charged after a fire at a Paddle Prairie home on January 5, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that a witness told them two people were unaccounted for.

A 47-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man were both found dead inside the home.

November sentencing date for man charged after several crimes

Alberta Justice says a man charged after an attempted robbery, break-in and vehicle theft, and a vehicle fire will be back in court November 16.

Tyren Field has pleaded guilty to charges of robbery, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and shopbreaking with intent in connection with the first two incidents.

He has already pleaded guilty to charges of arson damaging the property of others, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and resisting a peace officer in connection with the fire and has been given a six-month jail sentence.

RCMP said at the time that on October 2, 2021, a suspect with an edged weapon tried to rob a business located at 84 Avenue and Resources Road. A plexiglass barrier was broken but nothing was taken.

About a half-hour later, RCMP got a call about a break-in at a residential business in the County of Grande Prairie. A vehicle and tools were stolen. The suspect tried to assault the homeowner after being confronted but fled without anyone being physically hurt.

Just over an hour later, a vehicle was found on fire behind a school at 73 Avenue and 104A Street. It had been driven onto a field behind the school.

An arrest was made a short time later.

Trial dates set in High Level murder

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set after a 2020 murder in High Level.

The trial for Randall James Cardinal will be held March 28 to 31, 2023.

He was charged after the death of 28-year-old Brett Daniel Sowan from Paddle Prairie on September 21, 2020.

RCMP said at the time that they were called to a disturbance at a Paddle Prairie home and found Sowan with what they described as a firearms-related injury.

He died at the scene.

Cardinal was arrested the same day.
