Smith’s discrimination remark making Alberta an international embarrassment: NDP

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Opposition N-D-P leader says Premier Danielle Smith is making the province an international embarrassment with remarks surrounding those who didn’t get vaccinated during COVID-19.

Rachel Notley says Smith needs to withdraw the comments and apologize for saying those who didn’t get vaccinated during COVID-19 endured the worst discrimination Smith has ever seen.

Smith, who was sworn as the United Conservative Party premier on Tuesday, noted that unvaccinated couldn’t travel, work, visit loved ones or watch their kids play hockey.

Notley says she has been contacted by thousands of people offended by Smith’s comments.

She notes Alberta is now getting international attention, with the controversy now being covered by the business magazine Forbes.

Smith has said she didn’t mean to trivialize other forms of discrimination but has not apologized.

Notley also says Smith needs to be clear where she now stands on previous controversial statements such as smoking is not necessarily bad for your health, and that people have full control over whether or not they get early-stage cancer.
