New scan card program to be introduced at Clairmont landfill

The County of Grande Prairie has announced a new waste disposal program for those that use the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.

Technical Services Manager with the County Jennifer Besinger says the Clairmont Centre Access Program will provide a fair and equitable standard level of access to the facility for all residents.

“By implementing this new waste card program, we can reduce our waste and encourage recycling. The program itself is a one-thousand kilogram limit per household per year, for free.”

Besinger says each household will receive a card, which is scanned as they both enter and exit the centre.

“There will be no limit on the amount of waste that you are able to bring into the Clairmont Centre. It is just after that one-thousand kilograms, it will become subject to standard tipping fees. Recycling will remain unlimited.”

The program launches on November 1st, with the cards resetting back to zero on January 1st of each year.

Besinger feels the program will result in an improved environmental impact for County residents.

“It will encourage reducing the amount of waste that you create. It will assist in encouraging folks to recycle more. And just be much more cognizant of the way that waste comes into and out of the household.”
