Man charged with several crimes given jail time

Alberta Justice says a man charged in a string of arrests has been given a three-and-a-half-year jail sentence.

Angus Byron Ferguson pleaded guilty to a number of charges.

That included assault of a peace officer, flight from a peace officer, and dangerous operation of a vehicle for which he was given a jail term of 630 days.

Those stemmed from an arrest on Christmas Eve 2020.

Beaverlodge RCMP said at the time that it started when Ferguson, who was wanted on 16 warrants, was spotted on Horse Lake First Nation by police.

He fled in a vehicle and a pursuit started when he took off from a traffic stop.

The chase ended up in the Spirit River area, where Mounties from Beaverlodge, Spirit River, and Grande Prairie tried to stop the truck.

Ferguson rammed several police vehicles fleeing from a lease site and headed to Highway 49. The police forced the truck into the ditch. He ran away but was tracked down by the police dog and arrested about two-and-half-hours after first being spotted.

He was also given a 480-day consecutive sentence after pleading guilty to charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and obstructing a peace officer plus shorter consecutive sentences on charges like possession of stolen property over $5000 and failure to comply in separate arrests.

He was given 349 days credit on a total sentence of 1290 days, leaving 941 days left to serve.

Jail time for man charged after two drug arrests

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man charged after a pair of 2021 drug arrests has been given a 29-month jail sentence.

Nicholas Berry pleaded guilty to several charges on October 4 in Grande Prairie court.

He admitted to possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 in connection with a drug seizure on May 12, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that a search of a home at 75 Avenue and 115 A Street turned up 40 grams of cocaine, 34 grams of methamphetamine, 20 oxycodone tablets, drug paraphernalia, and over $500 cash.

Berry also pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking and failure to comply with a release order in connection with a drug arrest on September 6, 2021.

RCMP said Berry was pulled over during a traffic stop at 116 Avenue and 105 Street.

Police found he was wanted on warrants and a search of him, and the vehicle turned up 61 grams of cocaine, four grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia including plastic baggies, and more than $2300 cash.

Final accused in shooting case sentenced

Alberta Justice says the final person charged after a shooting at Sturgeon Lake in August of 2020 has been sentenced.

Tamara Marie Chowace pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault and was given a nine-month jail sentence in Valleyview court.

She was one of four people charged after a man was taken to hospital after being shot on August 15, 2020, in a Sturgeon Lake home.

RCMP said at the time that four people went into the home and a man was shot at close range. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

In December of 2021, Colin Aulden Bartlett also pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge and was given a 36-month jail sentence. Four weapons charges and two more of failure to comply were withdrawn.

Also, last December, Albert John Gladue was given four months of jail time served and a lifetime firearms prohibition after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. Six other charges, including attempted murder, were withdrawn.

An attempted murder charge against Dorian Anikian Harvey was also withdrawn.
