County continuing recreation on stormwater ponds

Oct 26, 2022 | 12:58 PM

The County of Grande Prairie has decided to move forward with the recreational use of stormwater ponds in residential subdivisions.

This was a pilot project the county started during last year’s winter season on two stormwater ponds in Whispering Ridge and Westlake Estates Subdivisions.

Reeve Bob Marshall said in a news release, “We saw many residents in the Whispering Ridge and Westlake Estates take advantage of the pond to enjoy outdoor winter recreation last season.”

The County is also working on creating a program where interested residents can apply to help maintain and manage the pond ice surface, similar to the pre-existing Neighborhood Ice Surface Program.

Marshall said in that same news release, “Safety is always our top priority, and we want to make sure this kind of activity on our stormwater ponds is as safe as possible.”

County staff will oversee the program and coordinate volunteers.

Residents are also encouraged to receive email updates for information about programs for volunteers and recreation on the stormwater ponds, if you would like to subscribe, click here.
