Tips on how to stay safe this Halloween: Grande Prairie RCMP

Oct 31, 2022 | 12:50 PM

Many residents will be out on the sidewalks of residential areas tonight for Halloween festivities in Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie RCMP would like to remind everyone to take extra care while driving tonight.

Sergeant Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment says multiple members of the force will be patrolling neighbourhoods to keep all safe.

“It’s certainly important to everybody out driving to take extra care because there will be so many people out tonight.”

He says members will be interacting with trick-or-treaters as well, “saying hi and seeing what their costumes are like, cause some have pretty good costumes. There will certainly be a connection with the kids throughout tonight to make sure they’re safe.”

Halloween safety tips for drivers by the RCMP:

  • When driving, remain diligent and alert, children trick or treating we don’t want to hurt
  • Take your time especially in residential spots, watching carefully for any costumed tots
  • Pay extra attention of your surroundings take heed, drive with smarts and please don’t speed

Ghosts and goblins are coming for you! Homeowners, what should you do?

  • Giving out treats? Make sure your steps and porch are nice and bright and that pets are secured to prevent bites and frights.
  • Use LED lights instead of candles, makes pumpkins much safer to look at from all angles
  • No homemade snacks or food, commercially packed is considered good.
  • Keep the paths nice and clear, helps our treaters treat without fear.

To our Tricksters, Treaters, and Candy Eaters:

  • Map out the route that you plan to roam, so adults are assured you will find your way home.
  • We know you want to showcase your trick or treat roar, but make sure the lights are on before you knock on that door.
  • So many houses where people reside, accept treats at the door and please, don’t go inside.
  • Wait! What ahead could that be? Always wear masks and makeup that allows you to see.
  • Wear bright clothes or reflective items to be seen during the night and remember to bring your flashlight.
  • Whether you walk, slither or sneak, do it on the sidewalks and not in the street
  • You may fly on a broom or a spaceship from Mars, but please be on the lookout for drivers in cars.
  • Avoid being a party of one, treating in a group is way more fun! (and safer too)
  • Keep to places with plenty of light, this will help you stay safer tonight.
  • Best part is so many pieces of candy to dig into!! But do not eat until a trusted adult has inspected them for you.
