Remembrance Day

Legion hosting Remembrance Day ceremonies November 11

Nov 4, 2022 | 5:58 PM

Friday, November 11, marks the 91st Remembrance Day in Canada.

This will also be the first time that ceremonies at both Bonnett’s Energy Centre and the Grande Prairie Legion will take place since the Covid-19 Pandemic.

President of the Royal Canadian Legion branch number 54 in Grande Prairie Brad Lewis says they have made a couple of changes this year to the Ceremony at Bonnett’s, having eighteen wreaths laid, and instead of veterans bringing them up, it will be cadets

He adds, following the ceremony at Bonnett’s, they will have an event at the legion, featuring lunch, students posters, poems, essay awards presentations, bursary presentations, a roast beef dinner, and even a dance to the live band Let’ er Rip. (full schedule can be seen below)

“In 2021 we were under high restrictions so it was all done online. Last year, we were back to the Bonnett’s Centre but we never really had much of a gathering afterward or a presentation of awards, but this year we’re hoping to have a full house inside.”

Lewis says all the events at the legion will be starting at 1 p.m.

“Come as you are. We don’t really care what your attire is as long as it’s not work clothes greasy and muddy, please come in, we rather have you there in jeans and a nice shirt, than you not show up at all.”

He recommends that residents who do want to come to partake in the legion’s ceremonies, get there early as they expect a packed house.

Lewis said anyone looking who is looking for a way to support the troops, can come down to their legion branch and buy a poppy.

” If they want to show their support for war veterans, they can definitely swing by and pick up a poppy, and they don’t have to be pricking their fingers with them anymore as we have a whole bunch of center pins that will be replacing the stick pin.”

Wreaths are also available at the legion and will be on sale for a range of prices starting at eight inches for $40, all the way up to twenty-four inches for $140.

To buy your own wreaths, poppies, or dinner tickets, call the legion at 780-532-3110, contact them through Facebook here, or visit Branch #54 during their hours of operation, located at 9912 101 Ave.
