Peace Region rugby players representing Canada on the international stage

Nov 9, 2022 | 5:50 PM

Two rugby players from the Peace have been representing Canada on the international stage.

Ferris Sandboe from La Glace and Danielle Franada from Grande Prairie have been part of the Canada Ravens team at the Women’s Rugby League World Cup being played in England.

Grande Prairie Rugby says Sandboe is the captain of the Grande Prairie Sirens while Franada came up with the high school program and also played for the Sirens before going to university.

She played for St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia where she was named a USports Rugby All-Canadian and was a finalist for Player of the Year in 2021.

Canada beat Brazil in its final game 22-16 at the World Cup.

The Canadian Press report on the games says Franada played a key role in the win.

“The game was knotted at 16-16 when veteran standoff Laura Mariu, from a Canadian scrum, kicked deep into the Brazil end with time running out. Dani Franada beat three Brazilians to the ball at the 20-metre line, booting it into the in-goal area where Fittes managed to touch down the bobbling ball just before it rolled out.”

“Franada’s conversion just seconds before the final hooter made it 22-16 Canada.”

Sandboe scored Canada’s first try in that game.

Canada finished 1-2 and out of the playoffs. They opened with losses to England and Papua New Guinea.
