Rubik’s Cube tournament in Grande Prairie this weekend

Thirty competitors will be battling it out for bragging rights and prizes this Saturday in Clairmont in the Grande Prairie Open 2022 Rubik’s Cube solving tournament.

Held by Alberta Cubers, the competition is featuring seven events; 3x3x3 cube, 2x2x2 cube, 4x4x4 cube, 3x3x3 cube blindfolded, 3x3x3 cube one-handed, pyraminx, and square-1 divisions.

Alexander Mutch, Junior Delegate for the World Cube Association, will be officiating the event and says the average age of “cubers” is 12 to 16 years old.

“Every now and then, you’ll have a cuber in their 40’s, which is interesting. The youngest I’ve seen is about six years old.”

Mutch says most of the events are formatted on an average of five solves, using three recorded solves, excluding the best and worst times for ranking.

“We will be having 3x3x3 blindfolded as well. That event is different with three attempts; you uncover your cube and start the timer, memorize your cube, put on a blindfold, and then solve the Rubik’s cube blindfolded.”

He says “It’s not as bad as people think, You can break it down into 20 pieces of information and if you group them, it’s actually easier to memorize than a phone number.”

A national record holder will also be competing on Saturday says Mutch.

“It’ll be neat to have one of the best solvers in all of Canada, in Grande Prairie,” he says.
