RCMP charge local company after a project to decrease metal theft

Nov 17, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A project run by the Grande Prairie General Investigations Unit (GIS) and Criminal Intelligence Services Alberta (CISA) to decrease metal theft in the Grande Prairie area has led to charges for a local business.

The Scrap Metal Dealers and Recyclers Identification Act has duties for scrap metal dealers and recyclers when they purchase or receive scrap metal.

Police reported a local company was allegedly not properly reporting these sales to the right governing bodies and were also allegedly failing to get all the necessary information from sellers.

H&W Metals and Salvage has been charged for failing to comply with the Scrap Metal Act by Grande Prairie RCMP.

Potential penalties for failing to comply include a fine of $50,000 if it is the company’s first offense, or $200,000 if it’s their second or subsequent offense.

If an individual is found guilty and it is their first offense, they will see a $10,000 fine or imprisonment for a term not more than a year or both.

However, if it’s the individual’s second or subsequent offense, it will be a fine of $25,000 or imprisonment.

If you have information regarding metal theft, call the Grande Prairie Detachment at 780-830-5701 or if you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or online at www.P3Tips.com.
