First influenza deaths of 2022 reported in Alberta, including four-year-old

EDMONTON, AB – Alberta Health is reporting several deaths related to influenza in the province.

New data released on Thursday, November 17, 2022, shows six fatalities due to the virus.

Health Minister Jason Copping says one of the six victims was four years old.

“I would like to extend my condolences to their family and loved ones at this difficult time,” says Copping.

He adds that he knows this news is distressing for parents and guardians, and that while most youths recover from the flu without complications, it can lead to severe outcomes.

One of the fatalities was for a person aged 50-59, three were between the ages of 70-79, and one was in their 80s.

While the numbers from Alberta Health show that one of the deaths occurred in the South Zone, it was not made clear which patient is from the region.

Copping says, “In the interest of privacy, we will not be providing additional identifying details.”

The health minister is asking Albertans to take steps to mitigate the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses.

This includes staying home when sick, wearing a well-fitting face mask when in public, covering coughs and sneezes, disinfecting surfaces at home, and maintaining good hand hygiene.

Copping says, “I would like to remind all Albertans, regardless of age, that getting your annual influenza vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from the flu.”

Earlier this week, Alberta’s new Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mark Joffe said that he is expecting a more severe flu season this year, based on what has been seen in Australia.

So far this year, Alberta Health Services (AHS) reports 2,082 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in the province, resulting in 355 hospitalizations and 34 admissions to intensive care units (ICU).

Flu shots can be booked online at the Alberta Health Services website.
