Grande Prairie Public Library’s Free Little Pantry looking for donations on Giving Tuesday

Nov 25, 2022 | 12:38 PM

Since 2020, a ‘Free Little Pantry’ has been set up in the Grande Prairie Public Library for people in need to take non-perishable and hygiene items for free, with no library card needed.

Giving Tuesday, a yearly international movement to empower donors falls on November 29, and the GPPL is trying to raise funds for the ‘Free Little Pantry’ in participation.

The shelves are replenished at least once daily due to a high amount of residents using the service.

Tara Wiebe, Head of Customer Services at the GPPL says often they can restock the shelves more than once a day.

She says their goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise $2,000; “that’ll allow us to keep the pantry well stocked for a few months.”

“We did not have a line in the budget for this, we still don’t, so it’s solely funded by donations from community members, local organizations, and grants we were able to get. So we’ve been really lucky that we’ve had a lot of generous people that have allowed us to keep our pantry well-stocked ever since we introduced it and we’d really like to keep that going. “

Last year on Giving Tuesday, the FLP received $3,271.

Wiebe says with the number of people using the resource on a daily basis, more funding allows them to keep the level of service they feel is acceptable.

“It is definitely free to use, for anybody. You don’t have to have a library card, people can just come in and grab something as needed. There is no barriers to access.”

The FLP is off to the right side of the entrance near the customer services at the GPPL.

Donations for Giving Tuesday can be made online through Canada Helps.
