Salvation Army in desperate need of volunteers for Christmas Kettle campaign

Nov 25, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Salvation Army are one week into their 2022 Christmas Kettle campaign but have not been able to open some of their locations due to a severe shortage of volunteers.

Captain Peter Kim says volunteers are needed throughout the campaign, but especially for the remainder of November so that they can get all of their kettle locations opened.

“Some locations are only open on the weekends because of the lack of volunteers. So we are really hoping that our community would get back into the spirit of ringing the bells and volunteering and helping out the Salvation Army.”

Volunteer shifts last only two hours, and Captain Kim says the commitment is not a huge one.

“I find that people are just getting back into the swing of volunteering, so it is just a matter of people saying that they are willing to help out with a couple of hours. It does not take a lot of time out of your day, but it does make a lifetime of difference to someone who is hungry.”

Captain Kim finds the two-hour shifts do go by quickly.

“Once people are on the kettles and doing that… I tend to sing Christmas carols and the time flies by – but that is my tradition. You can bring grandkids out and do the kettles with them, or do it as a group.”

Anyone that can spare a few hours for a good cause are asked to call 780-296-3946 to sign up for a shift.
