County council highlights

County of Grande Prairie wrapped up their regular council meeting on Tuesday.

Among the highlights were the approval of a three-year contract with Alphabet Childcare Foundation to provide childcare services out of the Wellington Resource Centre in Clairmont. The group already operates two childcare facilities in Red Deer.

Council also recognized and congratulated Family and Community Support Services Director Kathleen Turner on receiving a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal over the weekend. Turner was nominated by the Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta for her 33-year career of enhancing the social well-being of individuals and families, and her instrumental work in building community.

County council also approved a $210,000 request from Evergreen Park to support management payroll over the first quarter of 2023. The source for that funding wi;l; be determined during interim budget deliberations.

The County of Grande Prairie will host a Business Retention and Expansion International Conference in 2023. The conference, which was originally approved in 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic, will now be held in June of next year. The location of the event has not been released.

Also during their meeting this week, County council approved Business Assistance Program Funding for two local businesses. Both Bear Creek Maintenance and Hythe Pioneer Assisted Living will receive $1,000 to support workforce retention. The Business Assistance Program provides assistance to small and medium-sized businesses in the County of Grande Prairie to support workforce attraction and retention efforts.

And the County has a new Economic Development manager. Jordan Tidey was introduced to council at their meeting this week. Tidey was previously a consultant with MDB Insight, and brings extensive economic development experience from across Canada and the United States.
