87-year-old identified as Montreal driver who hit baby in carriage without stopping

Dec 14, 2022 | 8:21 AM

Montreal police have identified an 87-year-old man who they say was behind the wheel of a vehicle that hit a baby stroller last month and drove off.

Police had asked for the public’s help to find the driver, who was recorded hitting a stroller that was being pushed along a Montreal intersection by an Orthodox Jewish woman.

The baby was taken to hospital as a precaution but was uninjured.

Quebec Jewish groups had worried that the incident was motivated by hate because the collision occurred in a Jewish neighbourhood and the mother was wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing.

However, police said Tuesday they do not think the hit and run was motivated by hate and that the man was instead driving recklessly.

Police say Quebec’s car insurance board is looking into revoking the man’s licence and the prosecutor’s office will determine whether to charge the man.
