Man facing charge after Ukrainian refugee, 7, dies in Montreal hit and run

Dec 14, 2022 | 9:08 AM

MONTREAL — A seven-year-old girl who was killed in a hit and run Tuesday in Montreal had recently arrived in Canada with her mother and two siblings after they had fled the war in Ukraine.

Michael Shwec with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress says a parish priest is in contact with the mother and says an online fundraising drive will be set up to help the family cover funeral costs.

Shwec says the young girl arrived with her mother, brother and sister just two months ago and that the girl’s father is fighting in Ukraine against the Russian invasion.

Montreal police spokeswoman Const. Mariane Allaire Morin says a 45-year-old man turned himself in to police Tuesday afternoon, adding that the suspect will be arraigned today on charges to be decided by prosecutors.

Multiple calls were made to 911 at around 8:05 a.m. Tuesday about the collision on Parthenais Street, just east of downtown.

Authorities say the driver left the scene before police and first responders arrived and that the young girl died in hospital.
