Apprenticeship seats added at NWP

Dec 15, 2022 | 3:24 PM

The provincial government says it is funding 80 more apprenticeship seats at Northwestern Polytechnic for the 2022-23 academic year.

These will be in addition to the 783 already in place.

Another 24 electrician seats and 20 millwright spots have been added in Grande Prairie and 24 heavy equipment technician and 12 automotive service technician spots have been added at the Fairview campus.

A release from the province says most of these students have started their programs and that NWP is working to hire staff so wait-lists spots for programs that start in the spring can be expanded.

“This funding will enhance our ability to respond to and support the increasing demand for apprentices within our region. Without this unique partnership and support, we would be unable to respond quickly and deliver our newly established instrumentation second-period offering in Grande Prairie. We are grateful for this proactive support, enabling our responsiveness to workforce needs and creating a growing and sustainable future for skilled trades in our region,” says NWP dean of skilled trades Caitlin Hartigan in that same release.

Some instrumentation classroom equipment from Lakeland College will be brought here in time for the start of the winter term in January.

The province adds there is a growing shortage of people in the trades.
