People being encouraged to shop local places this Christmas

Dec 18, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The CEO of the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies and Alberta Open Farm Days is encouraging people to shop locally this Christmas.

Tim Carson wants people to check things like farmer’s markets.

“Really support that local flavour, those local vendors in your area to not only provide you with excellent access to food and products but also support your local economy.”

“There’s actually no downside to getting out there and experiencing what our regions have to offer.”

Carson says this is the time of year when these, like many other businesses, start to show a profit.

“A lot of the folks that I’m talking about are the ones that are often there selling at the farmer’s market, but really, there are groups that work diligently all year to have a full, robust inventory for Christmas.”

Carson says through the summer, agriculture and society events were very well attended.

“They were tremendously successful, which goes to show that our people are really excited to get back.”

“Through the pandemic we realized the value of our local community, which is also tremendous, getting into the local food systems and supporting that local greenhouse or that local group that’s growing lettuce or what have you.”

Carson says local markets and events can be found here and here.

Events can also be found on either organization’s Facebook page.
