Extreme cold causing AMA to have quadrupled wait times for tows and boosts

Dec 21, 2022 | 1:53 PM

CALGARY, AB –The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is asking for patience from their clients as the extreme cold is causing some major delays in services.

While the holiday season is normally a busy time for the vehicle agency, the frigid weather along with unfavorable road conditions is creating longer wait times for individuals looking for a tow or winch.

In fact, AMA reports that as of Tuesday morning, December 20, 2022, calls for full service in Alberta are at seven times the normal volume, whereas requests for a light service such as a boost or unlock are four times above average.

Current wait times for full service and light service vary from each city and town, but Calgary residents could wait upwards of 74 hours for a tow.

These increased delays and numbers are anticipated to remain for as long as the chilly weather sticks around.

Brandon Klassen with Automotive Services at AMA says, “We’re working hard to get to members as quickly and safely as possible. While the snow and wind blowing in with the cold temperatures slow down traffic, the added weather conditions also increase the risk faced by workers at the roadside. ”

“We’re asking everyone to please give tow truck operators the space they need to help broken down motorists safely,” explained Klassen.

He adds that anytime drivers see flashing amber, or blue and amber lights activated on a stopped tow truck, to slow down and move over to provide a full lane of clear space.

AMA has provided a few tips for drivers as they head into the holiday weekend:

  • Plug in your vehicle for three to four hours before driving.
  • Limit your driving during cold periods and dress for the weather. A quick trip to the grocery store can be dangerous if your vehicle breaks down and you’re left in the cold without proper winter attire.
  • Ensure your gas tank is at least half full and your mobile phone is charged, and always carry an emergency roadside kit. This should include things like a blanket, warm clothing, caution triangles, a flashlight, gloves, and a folding shovel (these are available pre-made at AMA).
  • Scan the road ahead and maintain a safe following distance that allows for adjustments. When the roads are icy or snowy, this means at least four to six seconds.
  • Drive to the weather, keeping in mind that the posted speed limit refers to ideal conditions.
  • If you find yourself broken down at the roadside, please get to a warm, safe place as soon as possible.
