Court update: Sentences given in murder, drug cases

Alberta Justice says the man charged after the murder of another man near Red Earth Creek in 2019 has been handed a life sentence.

Winston Derksen was given the sentence in early December in Peace River court.

He was arrested in March 2020 after the death of 24-year-old Faisel Fadul Aden four months prior to that date.

RCMP said at the time that on December 4, 2019, police from the High Prairie detachment were called out to a report of a deceased man off Highway 88 near Red Earth Creek.

An autopsy later determined he had been murdered.

A murder charge against co-accused Deidre Lafferty was withdrawn on October 18. 2022.

30-month sentence in drug arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a drug arrest earlier this year has been handed a 30-month jail sentence.

Jason Holz pleaded guilty to two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and three of failure to comply December 21 in Grande Prairie court.

He was arrested on May 24 this year.

RCMP said at the time that they believed the suspect was breaching bail conditions. A search of the man turned up several drugs; including 109 grams of what police believe was cocaine, 113 grams of suspected fentanyl and 38 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Holz is also one of the people charged in an April 2021 seizure of drugs that included heroin, cocaine and fentanyl.

He is due back in court on those charges January 11.

Four-year sentence in Grande Cache drug arrest

Alberta Justice says one of the two people charged after a November drug and weapon seizure near Grande Cache has been given a four-year jail sentence.

Brandon Emerson Elliott Rose pleaded guilty to two counts each of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited firearm, along with two other weapons charges and one of possession of stolen property.

He and another person were charged November 11 after what RCMP called at the time a traffic stop on a known offender.

Police seized two stolen firearms – one of them a handgun, along with 47 grams of suspected cocaine and 12 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Alberta Justice says three charges against co-accused Martina Rose were withdrawn.

Two people charged in large ALERT drug bust sentenced

Alberta Justice says two of the people charged after a drug investigation called Project Incumbent have been sentenced.

Christopher John Gilliat was handed a 21-month sentence for possession for the purpose of trafficking December 16 in Grande Prairie court. Three charges against co-accused Christine Emes were withdrawn.

Jeffrey Kayser was given an 18-month community sentence order by an Edmonton court. These sentences are comparable to house arrest and are served in the community.

In January of this year, Joseph Poirier and Preston Steven Dougan were each given 18-month community sentence orders.

Two others charged, Kevin Bey and Taylor Edgren, have trials scheduled for 2023. Another man, Matthew Hull, was also charged.

ALERT said at the time that in 2020, a search of three Grande Prairie homes turned up $288,000 worth of drugs and cash.

The drugs seized included over a kilogram of cocaine and a litre of GHB.

One of five people charged in October stolen property arrest sentenced

Alberta Justice says one of the five people charged after an October drug arrest has been sentenced.

Dallas John Wolsey pleaded guilty to two possession of stolen property charges and a weapons charge December 19 in Grande Prairie court. He was given a total of 135 days in jail.

He was one of five people charged after a September 22, 2022 arrest.

RCMP said at the time they were called to a report of a break-and-enter in the Crystal Ridge area.

Police then searched a Crystal Village home where they seized stolen property, what they called multiple firearms, ammunition and drugs that were thought to be cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.

Two of the other people charged, Hayley Brousseau and Mitchell Hall, have a trial date set for October 25, 2023.

Dwayne Olson is due back in court January 16.

An arrest warrant has been out for Stephanie Hido since she failed to show up for court on November 16.
