Charges laid after New Year’s Eve incident

Jan 1, 2023 | 4:45 PM

For the second time in less than a week, a firearms-related event led RCMP in Grande Prairie to start a shelter in place order.

The latest incident took place Saturday night at around 9:47 p.m., when Mounties were called to residence in the area of 96 Street and 98 Avenue.

Upon arrival, RCMP determined that one person was inside of the home, armed with a firearm.

After containing the property and evacuating nearby residences, police brought in further resources, including the Police Dog Service and Alberta RCMP Emergency Response team.

A 24-year-old Grande Prairie man surrendered to RCMP just before 6:00 a.m. on January 1, and was taken into custody.

A search of the home did turn up a rifle, that was seized by police.

The man, who’s name has not been released, faces several firearms related charges.

He remains in custody pending a judicial inquiry.

The shelter in place order was lifted at around 6:43 a.m. Sunday morning.
