Canfor extending production curtailments at “select” BC lumber mills

Jan 4, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Canfor says it is extending sawmill curtailments at its BC mills.

In a release, the company says this is because of what it calls “weak market conditions and the lack of available economic fibre.”

The company says curtailments will be extended by two weeks at what it calls select facilities.

This is expected to remove 21 million board feet of lumber from production and comes on top of the 150 million board feet taken out of production by cuts announced in December 2022.

The Grande Prairie mill was a part of the cut with a five-day production cutback that started on Boxing Day.

Tolko also cited weak markets and fibre supplies for its decision to take extra downtime in January at its two BC mills located in Soda Creek and Armstrong.

Tolko says this will affect 350 employees and reduce production of stud lumber by 35 million board feet.
