Highlights from Grande Prairie City Council’s first meeting of 2023

Grande Prairie city council held its first meeting of 2023 on Monday. Highlights from the meeting include:

– Council has approved having administration look for land where a possible dome for indoor soccer could be located. City staff has been asked to bring a report back to a standing committee on January 31. Council heard a presentation from Swan City FC about the need for space for indoor soccer in Grande Prairie, especially with the Leisure Centre to be demolished. The delegation says it had first come before council in 2020 about a new facility and has since had several meetings with other municipal representatives. The delegation says it has had to turn away people that wanted to play indoor soccer, calling this “disappointing and embarrassing.” Player numbers have dropped by 150 since September. Mayor Jackie Clayton says the city would work with the Joint Regional Recreation Committee before any decisions are made. The Swan City FC delegation says a dome could be up by November of this year. They also add that a lack of facilities like this has an impact when it comes to attracting healthcare professionals to Grande Prairie.

– Council has approved an official transfer of land title that will allow the construction of a new Sunrise House Youth Emergency Shelter. The land is located on 107 Avenue in the Gateway Area, near Margaret Edgson Manor and the new hospital. The land is valued at $485,500. Council approved a development permit in June of last year.

– Council also approved adding a report from a company called GHD to previous studies on long-term plans for the intersection of 100 Street and 132 Avenue. The report from GHD is related to plans by Circle K to build a convenience store, gas station and card lock at the old Windsor Ford location. The company’s report asks that a place to turn right out of the development be allowed on the west side of the development and another spot to make a right turn coming in be allowed on the north side. City councillors say they do not want to “landlock a business.”
