Alberta Sheriffs removed nearly 1,500 impaired drivers in 2022

2022 was a busy year for the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol, especially when it came to tackling impaired driving on the province’s highways.

Alberta Sheriffs removed 1,471 impaired drivers from highways last year, which works out to an average of just over four motorists a day.

In fact, since Alberta Sheriffs were given the authority to police impaired driving on their highway jurisdictions in July of 2021, 2,224 impaired drivers have been caught during that 18-month time span.

Eighty commercial vehicle drivers were nabbed in that time, where there is a zero-tolerance standard for drug or alcohol use while behind the wheel.

The Sheriff Highway Patrol also issued an additional 66,326 tickets in 2022 for other offenses such as speeding, distracted driving, and commercial vehicle safety.

A couple of the extreme cases of speeding included a 20-year-old man driving 228 km an hour in a 110 km/h zone west of Edmonton on Highway 16 in Parkland County.

Another was a 25-year-old man riding a motorcycle at 203 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 21 near Sherwood Park.
