Alberta RCMP prioritizing intersection safety to start the new year

Jan 12, 2023 | 10:26 AM

Alberta RCMP is focusing on intersection safety this month as they try to make roads and highways safer.

Mounties want to ensure Albertans remain alert and exercise caution during these busy points of traffic, as unsafe left turns, speeding, and distractions can put everyone using the intersection at risk of a collision, injury, or fatality.

Inspector Chris Romanchcych said in a news release, ” When motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users all come to a single point in traffic, the risk of error and collision increases significantly. Giving intersections the attention and caution they demand is crucial.”

RCMP have some tips for both pedestrians and motorists to keep everyone safe:

Motorists:

  • Obey traffic signs and signals, ensuring you come to a full stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Yield to pedestrians at all marked or unmarked crosswalks. Before making a turn, ensure crosswalks are clear.
  • Remember the right-of-way rule at three and four-way stops. The vehicle to arrive first proceeds first.
  • Drive defensively – Just because you are practicing safe driving behaviors doesn’t mean others are.

Pedestrians:

  • Use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals – Always wait until all vehicles have come to a complete stop before crossing.
  • Stay alert – Keep your head up, remove headphones, and put away cell phones or other electronic devices when in traffic.
  • Be seen – Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you. Wearing bright, reflective gear also helps stay visible in traffic.
