Trial for former AHS official charged with sexual offences wraps up, decision set for next month

Jan 12, 2023 | 12:02 PM

The trial for a former Alberta Health Services official has wrapped up and a decision is expected next month.

The three-day trial wrapped up Thursday in Grande Prairie with closing arguments.

In its presentation, the defence said a voicemail the accused left with the alleged victim’s family was an apology for acting more like parent than a friend, not an admission of guilt.

The defence also said the evidence given by the alleged victim was vague and lacked details on the time, circumstances, and places.

The Crown said the evidence given by the accused lacked strength, sounded like a denial, and said that the voicemail being an apology for sex acts was the only possibility.

The Crown also said it had called five witnesses; all of whom were consistent when giving their evidence, including the alleged victim who the Crown said was unshaken and consistent on the details.

The Crown alleged there had been multiple acts on multiple visits and that the explanation about overstepping bounds did not come up until Day 2 of the trial on Wednesday.

Justice Shaina Leonard has set February 7 as the date to give her decision.
