City sets up community sandbox for residents to improve traction on icy surfaces

Jan 13, 2023 | 10:29 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is pleased to begin offering a free community sandbox for residents to use at their leisure throughout the winter.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a news release, “We are optimistic this free community sandbox is a helpful resource for those looking to improve traction on their driveways and sidewalks during the winter months.”

The sandbox is available during all hours and is located at the City Service Centre, located near the south end of 112 Street.

Residents are welcome to take up to, two five-gallon buckets of sand per person, to be used on their sidewalks and driveways.

The project was designed to make residential sidewalks safer and accessible during winter months, giving residents the ability to increase traction in icy spots.

Clayton said in the same release, “We continually look for ways to serve the needs of our community and provide value to our residents.”

The City would also like to remind residents that sidewalks adjacent to homes must be shoveled within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall.
