Second annual Grande North Winter Festival set for this weekend

Three different Grande Prairie venues will play host to the second annual Grande North Winter Festival this weekend.

Events and activities will be talking place in at the Montrose Cultural Centre, Bonnetts Energy Centre, and Muskoseepi Park.

Event manager Jade Nyland says some events are free and tickets are needed for others

“So, we have activities going on at the Montrose Cultural Centre and all of the activities there are free of charge.”

“We have the Greenpath Energy skating oval and crokicurl rink. We have snow art sponsored by Fletcher Mudryk and then we have The Office snow maze and the Aquatera Ice Slide.”

Free activities in Muskoseepi Park will include skating on the pond, horse and wagon rides, and maple taffy.

Nyland says ticketed events are the Storm games on Friday and Saturday, ice carving, and concerts at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

Big Country 93.1 is presenting the Friday Ice Gardens Party with ice carving and a concert with Steven Lee Olsen.

Nyland says turnout for the first edition of Winter Fest last year was “really good.”

“It was phenomenal, especially considering that we were just getting out of COVID.”

“There were some restrictions last year, so we did have concerts planned that we ended up having to cancel because of the health and safety restrictions, so we are anticipating an even greater turnout this year.”

Nyland says they wanted to make the event walkable.

“So, hopefully, the weather co-operates, and it does remain walkable.”

“From (the) Montrose Cultural Centre, over to Bonnett’s Energy Centre, and then down to the park. You’re looking at a few blocks but we’ve kept it all kind of within the downtown core.”

Events start today (Friday, January 13) and continues through Sunday. The full schedule can be found here.
