Local hockey weekend recap

Rinks across the Peace region saw a lot of hockey this past weekend in a number of leagues.

AJHL

The Grande Prairie Storm played host to the Calgary Canucks and Blackfalds Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday night.

GP fell short in both games, 3-2 to the Canucks on Friday night and 5-3 to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

The Storm has now lost three in a row following the weekend, their next game is Friday at Bonnett’s Energy Centre hosting the Okotoks Oilers and the Drumheller Dragons on Saturday.

NWJHL

The Northwest Junior Hockey League had eight games played from Friday to Sunday.

On Friday:

  • The La Crete Lumber Barons won in a shootout against the Fairview Flyers 7-6
  • The Fort St John Huskies shut out the Beaverlodge Blades 4-0
  • The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings beat the North Peace Navigators 6-2
  • The Dawson Creek Kodiaks scored the overtime winner against the Sexsmith Vipers 5-4

On Saturday:

  • The Huskies racked up 57 shots and crushed the Flyers, 9-1
  • The Wheat Kings breezed by the Navs 6-2
  • Sexsmith bounced back with a win after an overtime loss the night before, beating La Crete 6-3

On Sunday, the lone game had the Huskies win their third game of the weekend, and second, shut out against the Lumber Barons 6-0.

NPHL

The Grande Prairie Athletics played the visiting Dawson Creek Canucks on Saturday night in the North Peace Hockey League.

The A’s lost 6-1 and gave the opposing team a three-point lead heading into the last stretch of the regular season.

Their next game is Friday as they head to Fahler to play the Pirates, who sit in first place in the East Division.
