GPPL welcomes Family Literacy Week

Jan 22, 2023 | 11:10 AM

The Grande Prairie Public Library is hosting numerous events to celebrate Family Literacy Week.

The library will host Family Storytime events all week with special guests, starting on Monday, January 23.

  • Monday: Storytime with Mike (featuring City Councillor Mike O’Connor) from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday: Storytime with Tiffany (featuring a local drag performer) from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Storytime with Dylan and Grant (featuring City Councillors Dylan Bressey and Grant Berg) from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: Storytime with the Storm (featuring the Grande Prairie Storm) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday: Storytime with the RCMP (featuring local RCMP officers) from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m.

The GPPL will also be encouraging everyone to partake in a competition on Friday against all the communities in Alberta, for the annual Family Literacy Day read-for-15 competition.

To participate:

  1. Read anything you want: a book, magazine, audiobook, cereal box, math homework, work memo, a news article, a recipe, your Facebook… anything!
  2. Visit Grande Prairie Public Library’s Read for 15 webpages to record how many people in your household or business read for 15 minutes: https://bit.ly/3wge91C (this link will go live on January 27)
  3. Challenge your friends and family to participate, too! The more people participating, the more likely Grande Prairie will be named the Most Readerly Community in Alberta!

The goal of Family Literacy Week is to promote literacy and encourage families and communities to read.

Baily Randolph, Head of Children’s services said in a release, ” “Almost 40 per cent of Canadian youth and 48 per cent of Canadian adults do not have suitable literacy skills. Reading with your child will give them advantages and the tools for success throughout their lives.”

Read-for-15 was created by NWT Literacy Council and was adopted by libraries across Alberta.
