Grande Prairie snowmobiler dies in Valemount, B.C. avalanche

A person from Grande Prairie region died in an avalanche over the weekend near the Alberta border, south of Valemount in British Columbia.

Avalanche Canada reported the death of the snowmobiler in the popular backcountry area on Saturday, January 21.

According to Avalanche Canada, the report states two snowmobilers were riding at the base of Bowl 3 in the Oasis area. The report says one person managed to ride away from the avalanche and the other was fully buried.

The survivor located the victim after digging through the snow but was unresponsive.

BC RCMP have confirmed the victim was from the Peace region and the BC Coroners Service is taking over the investigation of the death.

This is the third avalanche-related death in B.C. this month.
